Don't Embarrass Yourself on Zoom (Web Conference Etiquette 101)

Hosting or participating in web calls is a critical part of corporate life today. Below are our tips for making sure you’re putting your best self forward on these virtual calls whether it’s Skype, Zoom, WebEx, GoToMeeting or any other platform.

Here is everything you need to know to perfect the video conference call…

  1. Environment

    • Do your best to have a quiet room free of noise and distractions — pets, children, or external noise.

    • Utilize virtual backgrounds if you’re unable to find a clean background. Keep in mind this will require decent lighting for the software to work properly.

  2. Dress to impress

  3. Be aware of your audio/video settings

    • Do your best to mute when not talking

    • Look into the camera when speaking, it helps to reposition your video near your camera on your computer (typically the top-middle of your computer)

  4. Run meetings with purpose

    • Introduce everyone at the beginning of the meetings as if you were in person

    • Have a clear outline with goals for the meeting and key takeaways to minimize everyone’s time on the call

  5. Practice makes perfect

    • Close out browser windows or programs you don’t need during the call

    • Setup a practice session with a co-workers or friend and practice sharing your desktop or specific programs
